Puzzles are more than entertainment. They are a meditation, an exercise in patience and sometimes even an art. But do you know where they came from and how long they have been accompanying people?
Origins in the 18th century
The first jigsaw puzzles had little in common with the ones we know today. Their history begins around 1760 in England, where cartographer John Spilsbury came up with the idea of gluing a map onto a thin wooden board and cutting it into pieces along national borders. This is how “disection puzzles”, or educational puzzles - used in schools to teach geography - came about.
From education to entertainment
In the 19th century, jigsaw puzzles came under the radar and began to be regarded as a form of home entertainment, especially among the wealthy. They were still made of wood and cut by hand, and were therefore expensive and exclusive.
The breakthrough came at the beginning of the 20th century, when puzzles began to be manufactured from cardboard, which greatly reduced their cost and made them accessible to a wider audience. During the Great Depression in the US, the popularity of jigsaw puzzles grew even more - people were looking for a cheap pastime to occupy their time and take their minds off their problems.
Puzzles today
Currently, puzzles are experiencing a renaissance. They are returning to favour as a way to calm down, get away from screens and spend time creatively. Artistic editions, limited editions, eco-friendly materials and imaginative accessories are emerging. More and more people are treating them as a hobby, an element of interior design or... a form of self-therapy. a form of self-therapy.
